Summary of Service

Primary and Secondary Behaviour Support for children and young people to promote inclusion of those vulnerable, disaffected or at risk of not being able to access mainstream education.

Details of Service

The primary Service is delivered through the primary Behaviour Support Service, made up of the Core Service, Home Tuition Service and in Calne and Trowbridge the Special Emotional Literacy Centre provision.

Primary - The Core Service comprises 4 qualified teachers plus teaching assistants who work within schools to promote inclusion. The Home Tuition Service works with pupils unable to access mainstream schooling, either as a consequence of exclusion or for medical reasons.

Secondary Service - comprises 4 Young People's Support Centres based in 4 areas across the County and exists to promote the social and educational inclusion of the disaffected and vulnerable young people of Secondary School age in Wiltshire. This is in order to motivate and empower young people of all abilities and from all cultures, religious and ethnic backgrounds, to make successful choices in future education, employment or training, and to enhance their life opportunities. All work with young people and families is underpinned by the importance of developing mutual respect and an understanding of each others’ roles and responsibilities in improving outcomes for the young person. This approach is also reflected in the way that the service operates as a team.

Key strategies are:

  • Consultation with schools including in-service training.
  • Adjustment programmes - a multi-agency intervention strategy which might include elements such as emotional literacy managing anger or self-esteem.
  • Restart programmes, for pupils considered to be at imminent risk of exclusion.
  • Individual or small group tuition in numeracy, literacy and ICT.
  • In YPSS provision for excluded pupils at KS3 and co-ordination of Key Stage 4 packages, including work based learning and access to college courses.
