What we do:
- Monitor farms for animal movement records
- Administer licensing system for movement of animals
- Visit and inspect premises for animal welfare including slaughterhouses, livestock markets and farms.
- Carry out welfare checks on animal transport
- Prevent spread of animal diseases such as rabies, anthrax and BSE.
Trading Standards Officers are given the responsibility to monitor the whole of the food chain from "plough to plate" and from "farm to fork" to ensure that foodstuffs are of a good quality and that they are properly labelled. Provision of proper labelling enables consumers to make an informed choice.
Animal health and welfare has always been an important issue, especially during the Foot and Mouth epidemic which hit not just Wiltshire, but the whole of the UK. In all, Wiltshire had nine confirmed incidents of Foot and Mouth within its county boundaries.
As a direct result of the Foot and Mouth crisis, the Trading Standards Service was given the additional responsibility for the monitoring and licensing of all livestock movements in Wiltshire.
For Animal Movement forms only please telephone 01225 713547.
