In the aftermath of a major incident many people will be affected. They may be survivors of the incident; relatives of the survivors; relatives of those who have died as a result of the incident; or those affected simply by being involved in the response. Local Authorities co-ordinate the provision of welfare support to the community; lead the establishment of key humanitarian assistance facilities; and take on a key role in the recovery phase of emergencies.
The Emergency Planning Unit works in close consultation with the Department of Community Services and the Department of Children and Education and Wiltshire and Swindon PCT coordinating the social and psychological support in the medium and long term to individuals, families and communities affected by an emergency. This includes providing rest centres, friends and relatives reception centres and humanitarian assistance centres and the resources staff needed to administer these centres
