| Can you confirm, or otherwise, that Standlynch Park, Charlton All Saints, was acquired by Act of Parliament in 1814, re-named Trafalgar House, and presented to Nelson's elder brother William?
Was this purchase made out of the £99,000 that had been awarded by Parliament to William Nelson or was a gift made'by a grateful nation' in addition to that award?
And why was the Trafalgar House purchase made so long after Nelson's death?

| My house is one of two which were originally part of a brewery which was in operation, in Shaw, during the 1800s.
We were told by the previous owner that the brewery was called Mallards. The 1844 census records a brewery & maltsters in Shaw called Hazeland & Manning. As Shaw is a small place I am guessing that these are one & the same, possibly having changed hands at some time. Do you have any information on the history of the brewery. The address is 2 The maltings, & the postcode is SN12 8EF. The larger building next door, now Rocking Horse Nursery, was apparently the actual brewery & we were the malthouse.

| I am not sure whether Longford Castle comes within your sphere of interest. My great-grandfather Robert Robey, a gamekeeper there, married Sarah Downing in 1849, and he died in 1891. In the 1841 census Sarah is shown as being a cook at Longford Castle. I understand that the Castle is not open to the public but I should, of course, be very interested to learn of anything which might tell of life in the Castle at that time. It may well be that Robert was a gamekeeper on the estate, and that was how he met Sarah. |

| Date Question Asked: Monday 13th August 2007 18:39 |
| In his will, my father left to my brother a beautiful Queen Anne walnut writing desk which he believed to have come originally from the Judges’ Lodging in Salisbury when this was given up sometime in the 19th Century and then belonged to his grandfather Robert Robey of West Grimstead, Wiltshire.
Recent research into the family history shows that Robert Robey, who was a gamekeeper, died in 1891 so he must have acquired the desk before that date.
I wonder whether you have any knowledge of a Judges’ Lodging in Salisbury?
If so, I should be most interested to hear of its location and whether it still exists. Are there any records of its disposal? - probably in the second half of the 19th Century – even an inventory of its contents!

| I was amazed and delighted to find the question and answer posed on 12th May 2006 regarding the Jay family and their printing/engraving business. I am a direct descendant of William Jay and his wife Ann, and of their son William and wife Martha Frances. Thank you very much to the person who researched and shared the information. I am keen to learn more about Salisbury and Wiltshire generally so your site was a great joy to find. I live in South Australia and research is difficult.
I am wondering if you have any information about the business of Martha Frances's father John Abel, born in Salisbury/Fisherton Anger about 1801 and a long time Cordwainer/shoemaker in Salisbury. He and wife Harriet Forder/Farder lived in Church Street much of their lives. In particular, I am interested to know exactly where his business premises were and if the building still exists.
I am also curious to know if John or Harriet's parents were also
Wiltshire people so would appreciate any suggestions you may have for contacting others interested in genealogy in Wiltshire.
Anything you can tell me will be very much appreciated.

| Where exactly was Wolfhall (or Wulfhall) the home of the Seymours at the time Jane became queen of England? Does anything remain of the site and can it be visited? If so, have you a National Grid Reference for it? |

| Help! I am confused! Having read Desmond Hawkins’ “The Grove diaries” I thought I would like to find out more about Ferne House. But while the Victoria History states the house was demolished forty years ago, and I cannot see it on any modern map, it is still described, under ‘Berwick St John’ in the latest edition of Pevsner’s “Wiltshire” in the “Buildings of England Series”. What’s going on? |

| On a recent visit to the parish church in Berwick St John I came across a memorial inscription, a locker and a photograph of Admiral Lord Fisher, who, I learn from the DNB, was interred after cremation at the parish church at Kilverstone in Norfolk, where he lived. What was the reason for the monument in Berwick St John? |
