Householders should be aware that it is their responsibility to protect their property from flooding. There are many things you can do to help yourself. The most important thing is for anyone who is at risk of flooding or has experienced it, is to make your property flood resilient. This means as a property owner taking responsibility for protecting and arranging your property so that in the event of a flood it will suffer the least amount of damage and will be habitable sooner.
If resources allow, the Council may provide a limited supply of gel sacs to domestic properties properties that have been flooded or are in imminent danger of flooding. However the ability of the council to respond in flooding emergencies will be affected by factors such as priority for the elderly or infirm when assisting people, or the protection of commercial property to prevent environmental pollution.
In some localities where there is a known flood risk the town and parish council may hold a limited supply of gel sacs for distribution in times of emergency. Contact your parish council to find out about the availability of gel sacs in your area.
The National Flood Forum has a directory of suppliers for flood resilient items such as gel sacs, flood boards and air brick covers which householders can purchase.
