The aim of the ‘Safe Places’ project is to establish ‘Safe Places’ across Wiltshire, creating community owned initiatives that support a safe environment for people living within Wiltshire and can be used when individuals may feel in need of a little extra help or support when out and about in their local community due to feeling anxious.
The Safe Places scheme is due to be piloted in Salisbury followed by Devizes and the Erlestoke corridor of villages over the next few months. Some local businesses in Salisbury have already signed up to participate in the scheme i.e. Debenhams, Cafe Mocha, Cafe Alabare, Street Pastors and The Chapel to name a few.
Unfortunately the ‘Getting Started’ event due to be held at Salisbury Library on 28 July 2011 has had to be cancelled, but will be rescheduled at a later date.
This event is for invited guests, where the aim is to encourage participation amongst local business and raise the profile of this new scheme as it develops.
The intention is that all Wiltshire Council offices in the pilot areas i.e. Salisbury, Devizes and Erlestoke will be a ‘safe place ‘ and display the sticker shown below to alert members of the public.
A Safe Place is somewhere that people can go when they need some support if they are out and about in their local community in Wiltshire.
Key businesses and organisations who are part of the project will display an A5 Safe Place sticker in their window.
People who are part of the scheme can choose to have a form of Safe Place identification using an orange wallet with an In Case of Emergency card, ICE, which they would show to the Safe Place, in order to get the correct support.
When a person uses a safe place they will be:
- Listened to
- Reassured
- Supported
- Offered time and a safe place to wait
