Protecting Privacy
CCTV cameras are installed in south Wiltshire in order to protect the residents and assist in the prevention and prosecution of crime and anti-social behaviour.
It is acknowledged that by some they are regarded as a gross infringement of personal liberty.
The Council is committed to the belief that everyone has
the right to respect for his or her private and family life. Cameras are therefore carefully positioned to respect the privacy of the public. Our CCTV Operators are trained to the highest level with particular emphasis on privacy and confidentiality
issues and our
Code of Practice 338kb and Procedural
Manual are continuously reviewed to ensure that they comply with all relevant legislation and good practice
guidance.
How to request CCTV evidence
There are strict guidelines regarding access to CCTV data. The Council has adopted the nationally recommended guide ‘Release of Data to Third Parties’ produced by the national CCTV User Group.
The guide also covers access by indivuals wishing to view personal data in accordance with the Data Protection Act or obtaining information through the Freedom of Information Act.
All requests for the release of CCTV data must be channelled through the Council’s CCTV Manager. See below for contact details.
A fee may be charged for this service.
Generally speaking there is no public access to CCTV data. Agencies authorised under our Code of Practice are required to make written application giving precise reasons for requiring the data.
For more information about obtaining CCTV data, please contact the CCTV Manager using the details shown below:
