The Wiltshire & Swindon Biological Centre (WSBRC) is one of a growing number of Local Record Centres across the UK. The centre acts as a repository for high quality biological and environmental information in the county of Wiltshire and the borough of Swindon.
Wiltshire Council together with a partnership of organisations, including the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, Swindon Borough Council and Natural England, fund, support and direct the work of the Record Centre.
The centre comprises a small team of staff and volunteers, who bring together, manage and interpret biological and environmental records from a wide range of organisations, volunteers, recording groups and individuals.
By bringing together and interpreting a wide range of environmental information, an overall picture of the status and distribution of habitats and species in Wiltshire is revealed. This information is vital for ensuring that important areas for biodiversity are taken into account when considering plans for new developments or change of land use. The information collected by the centre also helps environmental organisations and land managers to target their activities more effectively. A vital role of the centre is supporting the work of the Wiltshire Biodiversity Action Plan partnership and the Wiltshire Wildlife Sites project.
