Country parks and open spaces are great places to experience the countryside, and many provide valuable 'green lungs' within urban areas. Many countryside sites are managed by Wiltshire Council. Wiltshire Council (and Swindon Council) has a Countryside Ranger Service.
The Council directly owns, leases and manages a number of countryside sites across Wiltshire, open to the public, free of charge for quiet informal recreation and enjoyment. Some are countryside destinations in their own right, whilst others provide gateways to the wider countryside. Many have high nature conservation, landscape, archaeological, historical or leisure value.
When planning a visit to a countryside site make sure that you take appropriate clothing for the time of year and stout footwear. Make sure someone is aware of your destination and the time you will be there. Remember, never to leave valuables in an unattended car.
Most country parks and open spaces are free of charge and open to anyone, although entry charges apply on some sites. Some of the more remote countryside sites may have areas that provide difficulties for people with mobility problems. Contact the Countryside Ranger Service or relevant organisation for further information.
