Cotswold Water Park Master Plan

The Cotswold Water Park is an area of significant change. Over many decades, sand and gravel extraction has created a network of 147 lakes in an area of the Upper Thames valley that currently spans 40 square miles of countryside. A range of recreational and nature conservation after-uses together with a number of holiday and second home developments have established on and around the lakes.

Approximately 22,000 people live within the boundary of the Cotswold Water Park and the towns of Cirencester and Swindon are close by.

In order to manage change for the benefit of residents, wildlife and visitors, the Cotswold Water Park Joint Committee commissioned the consultants Scott Wilson to prepare a “Strategic Review and Implementation Plan for the Cotswold Water Park” (commonly referred to as the ‘Master Plan’). After extensive consultation, the ‘Master Plan’ was adopted by the Joint Committee in 2008.

The ‘Master Plan’ sets out a 20 year vision for the Water Park with detailed objectives and an ambitious Action Plan. The Action Plan will be delivered by a wide range of organisations and individuals in the public, private and voluntary sectors.

The guiding principle of the ‘Master Plan’ is “The Vision will be achieved by harnessing the resources and economic activity in the Cotswold Water Park to create a distinctive and sustainable countryside of high environmental value for the benefit of local residents and people working in and visiting the area.”

To view and download copies of the ‘Master Plan’ documents please click here.

Hard copies of the documents are available at £20.00 each and a CD ROM disk containing all documents in electronic format is available at £5.00.
