Sustainability is relevant to all of us and is about meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. There is growing realisation that the way we develop as a society is not sustainable and that not only are we living beyond our means, but our activities are damaging the planet.
We need to find ways that improve quality of life whilst living within our environmental limits and in a way that does not cause irreparable harm to the very environment that we depend on. The increasing stress that we place on resources and environmental systems such as water, land and air can not continue indefinitely.
There are many challenges now facing us – the serious implications of a changing global climate, the need to develop renewable sources of energy and to use energy and dwindling natural resources more efficiently, the need to conserve the landscape, habitats and species that make up our natural environment, and the need to provide sufficient food in a fair and equitable manner in a way that does not conflict with the above.
We can all do our bit – as individuals or organisations.
Please check out the links below to see what Wiltshire Council is doing as an organisation and what you can do as an individual, to make our lives more sustainable.
