What is the 10:10 campaign?

The 10:10 campaign aimed to encourage every individual, business, school or organisation in the UK to cut their carbon emissions by 10% in 2010 and has continued into 2011. The plan is simple: by signing up any individual, school, business or organisation pledges to do their best to reduce their emissions.

What is Wiltshire Council doing?

On 15 September 2009, Wiltshire Council debated a motion proposing withdrawal from the Nottingham Declaration on climate change. The motion was defeated by 83 votes to 6, and the result of the debate was overwhelming support for the work the council is doing to tackle climate change. During the debate, the lead Cabinet member pledged to sign the council up to the 10:10 campaign to further highlight its commitment to this area of work and reflect the mandate of those present.

The 10:10 target for councils translates as a minimum 3% reduction on key emissions compared with the financial year 2009/10. For Wiltshire Council, this equates to saving 658 tonnes CO₂ per year by the end of March 2011. A number of energy saving projects implemented during 2010/11 will result in a reduced carbon footprint to the extent that we expect to have exceeded our 10:10 target by 28%.

What can I do?

The first step is to pledge your commitment to reduce your carbon emissions by 10% . Wiltshire Council will be providing information and tips on what you can do to meet your 10% commitment. Commitments could include lagging your loft, upgrading your boiler, or taking one less long-haul flight.
