Climate Week is one week to show how we can combat climate change – 21 to 27 March 2011.
Across the UK thousands of events and activities, highlighting the positive steps being taken to help combat climate change will take place as part of the UK’s first Climate Week.
In Wiltshire, we are asking members of the public to get involved in the Climate South West - Whatever the Weather photo competition to help highlight some of the extreme weather being experienced in the South West as a result of a changing climate. The competition asks for pictures of extreme weather relating to the themes: hot, cold, wet and dry and the top prize is an annual family pass for one year’s free admission to National Trust Places. The deadline for entries is March 13 2011.
Wiltshire council is also launching its new Carbon Management Plan (CMP) which is part of a wide-range of moves to reduce energy consumption and encourage Wiltshire’s residents to do the same. The plan includes a target of saving 11,800 tonnes, a 20% reduction of its carbon footprint by March 2014.
The council adopted the
Energy, Change and Opportunity (ECO) Strategy Energy, Change and Opportunity
(ECO) Strategy 900kb in January, which sets out our aims to save money by reducing
carbon emissions and work with local communities to help them do the same.
During Climate week the council will be releasing more details on its new Energy Monitor Lending Scheme. The scheme will give Wiltshire residents the opportunity to borrow an energy monitor free of charge from county libraries. The monitor will show you how much electricity you’re using at home and help you to identify how you can reduce your electricity bill. The scheme will be launched in April and more details will follow shortly.
Teams and organisations can also take part in a Climate Week Challenge. If you feel your team or organisation could think of an innovative solution or a way to inspire positive action which has a real impact, or it has an idea that could play a major part in creating a low carbon future why not take part. Put your organisation, school, community group or youth group to the test and take part in the Climate Week Challenge
