  • Description:The old, inefficient oil boilers will be replaced with modern, efficient gas boilers. This will protect the school from rising oil prices and cut carbon emissions.
  • Status: Expected completion - 1 September 2011

  • Description:A device was fitted to condition the heating system water to improve the efficiency of the boilers.

Bradford on Avon Library

  • Description:Some of the fluorescent lighting in the library was replaced with energy-efficient fittings. The thinner fluorescent tubes improved the overall light quality while reducing energy consumption.

  • Description: The fluorescent lighting in the car park was replaced with energy-efficient fittings. The thinner fluorescent tubes improved the overall light quality in the car park while reducing energy consumption.

Corsham Springfields Leisure Centre

  • Description: This project was to install insulation to reduce heat loss from the building, reducing the annual heating costs.

Devizes

Devizes Leisure Centre

  • Sports Hall Lighting Upgrade
  • Avoided 26 tCO2 annually
  • Avoided energy cost: £ 3,650 annually
  • Description:  This project replaced the lighting in the sports hall, replacing the out-dated yellow-colour light with a clear white light. The new light fittings reduced glare when playing sports and provided a brighter environment with reduced energy consumption.
  • Status: Completed

Devizes Leisure Centre

  • Variable Speed Motors
  • Avoided 23 tCO2 annually
  • Avoided energy cost: £ 2,550 annually
  • Description: This project was to install efficient motors to pump water around the leisure centre. These motors were fitted with special controls to slow them down whenever possible. The new motors do not work as hard as the motors they replaced and so use less energy.
  • Status: Completed

Devizes Leisure Centre

  • What: Heat Recovery
  • Avoided 60 tCO2 annually
  • Avoided energy cost: £ 8,950 annually
  • Description: This project was to install new air-handling equipment to capture heat from the warm swimming pool air just before it is replaced by fresh air from outside as part of the normal building operation. This heat was passed into the cool fresh air before it arrives in the swimming pool area to cut the heating cost without reducing air quality.

  • Avoided energy cost: £ 1,800 annually
  • Description: This project added light and motion sensors in the corridors and activity rooms to switch off the lighting when the room is empty or there is already enough natural light.

  • Avoided energy cost: £ 750 annually
  • Description: This project added insulation to reduce the amount of wasted heat escaping from the heating system.

  • Avoided energy cost: £ 100 annually
  • Description: This project trialled the use of occupancy sensors in storage areas, where lights are often left on between periods of regular use.

Shurnhold Council Offices

  • Air-Source Heat Pumps
  • Avoided 9 tCO2 annually
  • Avoided energy cost: £ 2,800 annually
  • Description: Two unheated spaces at the Shurnhold council office site were identified for heating by electric heat pumps, rather than extending the inefficient oil heating system. These heat pumps use electricity to efficiently capture heat from the outside air, even in cold weather. The technology is cheaper and emits less carbon than oil-fired heating.

  • Avoided 4 tCO2 annually
  • Avoided energy cost: £ 500 annually

Salisbury Five Rivers Leisure Centre

  • Leisure Centre Combined Heat &Power
  • Avoided 242 tCO2 annually
  • Avoided energy cost: £ 38,000 annually
  • Description: This project was to install a device to generate electrical power and heat for the leisure centre. The unit is situated outside the building next to the main entrance. The unit has dramatically reduced the cost of running the leisure centre by generating electricity to use on site, instead of drawing it from the National Grid. Heat is a side product of this process and is used to heat the pool water.

  • Description: The lighting in the auditorium was modernised to halve the energy consumption and bring the standard of the equipment up to date.

  • Lighting Upgrade
  • Avoided 21 tCO2 annually
  • Avoided energy cost: £ 3,000 annually
  • Description: The fluorescent lighting in the car park was replaced with energy-efficient fittings. The thinner fluorescent tubes improved the overall light quality in the car park while reducing energy consumption.

  • Description: This project was to install a dosing system to put a special ingredient in the pool water that cuts down heat loss when the pool surface is not broken by splashing. This is ideal for areas where a conventional pool cover cannot not be installed.

  • Street Bollards Lighting Upgrade
  • Avoided 250 tCO2 annually
  • Avoided energy cost:£ 36,800 annually
  • Description: The fluorescent lamps in many of the bollards across Wiltshire were replaced with LED fittings. The new fittings generate light even more efficiently than the ones they replaced, using a fraction of the electricity to light the bollard.
