Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire is appointed by The Queen on the advice of the Prime Minister. He or she is the permanent representative of the Crown in the County and normally serves until retirement at 75 years of age.
The office of Lord-Lieutenant dates from the reign of Henry VIII, at which time the holder of the office had responsibility for the maintenance of order in the Lieutenancy and for military measures necessary for defence. In 1871 the militia was removed from the Lord-Lieutenant’s direct control but it was not until 1921 that the Lord-Lieutenant finally lost the power to call on all able-bodied men of the county to fight in case of need. The traditional links with the military have been preserved in a modern form in the association of the Lord-Lieutenant with the Volunteer Reserve Forces and Cadets.
The Wiltshire Lieutenancy covers the historic county of Wiltshire, i.e. the areas administered by Wiltshire County Council and Swindon Borough Council.
