Public Notice for Closure of Castledown School
Wiltshire County Council - Notice of Proposal to Discontinue Castledown Foundation Secondary School, Ludgershall, In Preparation for the Establishment of an Academy
Notice is given in accordance with section 15(1) of the Education and Inspections Act 2006 that Wiltshire County Council County Hall Trowbridge BA14 8JB intends to discontinue Castledown Foundation Secondary School, Ludgershall, Andover, SP11 9RR on 31 August 2009.
It is proposed that an Academy opens on the 1st September 2009, initially in Castledown Foundation Secondary School's current buildings. Replacement accommodation is planned by 2010. This proposal is subject to the Academy being approved by the Department for Children, Schools and Families.
All statutory requirements to consult in relation to this proposal have been met.
Places at the new Academy will automatically be available for all current pupils of Castledown Foundation Secondary School. Admission may also be sought to other schools, which have places available.
All pupils attending Castledown School are expected to transfer to the Academy. As a result, existing pupils should not have to make any additional journeys or increase the distances they have to travel to school. The County Council will continue to minimise car use through the provision of group transport wherever possible.

Within six weeks from the date of publication of this proposal, any person may object to or make comments on the proposal by sending them to the Director for Children & Education, Wiltshire County Council, School Buildings & Places, County Hall, Bythesea Road, Trowbridge, BA14 8JB and marked ref SM/NH/Castle.

Explanatory Notes
The reasons for these proposals are set out in the consultation document circulated in November 2007, further copies of which are available on request from the School Buildings & Places Team by contacting 01225 713969.
Academies are publicly funded independent schools with sponsors from the private and voluntary sectors. The establishment of an Academy is subject to the agreement of the Secretary of State. It is proposed that the closure of Castledown Foundation Secondary school should be approved to take effect only if by the date of closure an agreement has been made under section 482(1) of the Education Act 1996 for the establishment of an Academy to replace Castledown Foundation Secondary School.
