Under the Childcare Act 2006 local authorities take on a new duty from April 2008 to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that the provision of childcare is sufficient to meet the requirements of parents in their area in order to enable them to work or undertake education or training leading to work.
Councils were required to undertake a Childcare Sufficiency Assessment before the end of March 2008 to assess the supply of, and demand for, childcare in their area; which Wiltshire has now done. Further detail on the guidance which set out the framework for The Childcare Sufficiency Assessments can be obtained from the Surestart website.
The Local Authority is now publishing it's completed report having consulted from January to March 2008. We will publish our action plan in May 2008.
