A parliamentary general election has to take place within five years of the last general election. However, the government may call a general election at any time during that five year period.

One MP (Member of Parliament) is elected for each parliamentary constituency by way of majority. Each MP then serves in the House of Commons, representing his or her constituency.

Wiltshire Council has five parliamentary constituencies: Chippenham, Devizes, North Wiltshire, Salisbury and South Wiltshire.
