Introducing Equality and Diversity
The Corporate Equality and Diversity team currently consists of a Corporate Equality and Diversity Manager, and Equality and Diversity Policy Officer, a Community Cohesion Officer and 2 Equality and Diversity Officers
The team’s key priorities for 2010 are to:
- Support and influence strategy / policy development, implementation and review to ensure equalities and customer focused perspectives are fully integrated.
- Support Elected Members, Departments / Service Areas to work effectively under the equality duties and promote inclusion.
- Work with internal and external partners to promote good community cohesion and inclusion.
We have published a number of policies and schemes promoting equal opportunities and action plans which aim to address any inequalities. In light of the recent move from 5 councils to one Wiltshire Council in April 2009, our previous equality policies and equality schemes will remain active until they are harmonised and reviewed. They will be further strengthened as a result of our work to develop an Integrated Equality Scheme for Wiltshire Council.
Existing equality schemes will remain, but the Race Equality Scheme will be extended to cover the harmonisation period until the integrated equality scheme has been developed (target date April 2010).
- Comprehensive equality policy and corporate equality action plan
- Disability equality scheme and action plan
- Gender equality scheme and action plan
- Race equality scheme and action plan
To prepare for this, Wiltshire Council, NHS Wiltshire, Wiltshire Police and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service are working in partnership to make it easier for people to feedback their views on the organisations’ work to promote equality. By working together we can take joint action and provide consistent services which are fair for all. This joint engagement work will inform the equalities action plans for each organisation and will also be shared across the voluntary and community sector to help plan services.
There will be a Single Equality Scheme Consultation Event on 24th Feb 2010
in Devizes.

We are continually monitoring the effects of its employment policies and procedures.
We consult about equality and diversity work across the organisation, in service provision across the county and in partnership with other organisations in Wiltshire through:
- an extensive and ongoing programme of equality impact assessments
- the Council’s fora for disabled employees and black minority ethnic employees
