Here is a video introducing the Disability Equality Scheme for Wiltshire in British Sign Language.
Wiltshire Council recognises that the term ‘disabled people’ is the preferred terminology compatible with the social model of disability. This is not to exclude people, however, who are covered by the Disability Discrimination Act but prefer not to be referred to as a disabled person.
How can Wiltshire Council make a difference to the everyday life of a disabled person?
- This might be you … or
- This might be a work colleague … or
- This might be someone using the council service you provide
By ‘disabled person’ we mean someone who has a long term illness, impairment or a disability that adversely affects their ability to carry out day-to-day activities, as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA). It’s not the disability or the impairment that is the ‘problem’, but the social and physical barriers in the environment that are ‘disabling’.
Involving council service providers and disabled people, we have drawn up a plan of actions that will make changes in the services we provide and will make changes in council job opportunities. This action plan is part of a document “The Disability Equality Scheme”, which was published in December 2006.

We consulted you on the summary version of the Action Plan during January, February and March 2007
