Summary of Service

What is Domiciliary Care?

Domiciliary care (sometimes known as home care) is a service available to enable people to remain in their own homes as independently and as long as possible.  This can be a range of practical tasks including personal care, such as assistance with washing and dressing, getting in and out of bed, assistance with toilet needs and continence management.

Our care managers work closely with older people, people with disabilities, families and carers, in order to provide appropriate levels of support, working towards keeping them as independent as possible and thus able to remain in their own home, with family or friends for as long as they wish. To do this we work with other agencies so that we can try to meet your needs.  We will also give advice if you are arranging your own care.

Details of Service

How do I access the service?

The service can only be accessed following an assessment by a care manager which is subject to the eligibility criteria for the Department Community Services’ Adult Social Services.

Once a care manager has completed an assessment and you are eligible for the service a request will be passed to a suitable domiciliary care agency.  They will then arrange a visit with you to discuss the detail of the care to be provided as well as undertaking Health and Safety risk assessments to ensure a safe working environment for domiciliary staff and service users.

Will I be charged for the service?

Charges are subject to a financial assessment completed by a member of the Financial Assessments and Benefits team, prior to commencement of care.

What can I expect from the service?

You can expect the domiciliary staff to:

  • Respect your home and recognise that all care workers are visitors to it and will act accordingly.
  • Recognise and respond to your needs with sensitivity and flexibility.
  • Offer an equal service, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, marital status, age, ability, race, religion, culture or lifestyle.
  • Treat you as an individual and respect your dignity, privacy and independence.
  • Acknowledge your right to make choices about your life style.
