In the past, limited guidance was available to Highway Authorities with regards to the setting of speed limits - this resulted in a lack of consistency both locally and nationally. In order to improve this situation, in 2006, the Department for Transport issued Department for Transport Circular 01/06 Setting Local Speed Limits which set out current best practice.
All highway authorities were requested to review the existing speed limits on A and B class roads, in accordance with the circular and implement the resulting recommendations.
The review was carried out by the council’s consultants, and the results forwarded to Parish and Town Councils for consultation. The following links outline the information provided:

The review of all speed limits on the A and B class roads is now complete.
The changes to speed limits on the A and B class roads will commence in April 2011 and could take up to 18 months to complete.
The review of speed limits on the C and Unclassified roads will not commence until 2012 at the earliest and is dependent on progress of the role out of the A and B class changes.
