The Healthier Wiltshire project engages with communities in a variety of ways:
Schools and other educational establishments are encouraged to develop appropriate environments and opportunities for the students and staff.
Those groups that have traditionally been 'harder to reach' are given the chance to improve their health through specific targeted approaches. The next phase of the LAA will develop specific projects in areas of social deprivation.
Lifestyle surveys have been completed in many LEA secondary schools.
Early discussion with primary school heads have indicated a very positive attitude towards improving the diet and exercise options available to younger children.
Many examples of good practice are emerging across the County of communites working together to improve the health of that community. The Pewsey Leisure Centre is one such project.
Another is the Community Sport and Physical Activity project championed by Community First, Age Concern Wiltshire, Youth Action Wiltshire and Wiltshire and Swindon Activity and Sport Partnership (WASP), which has achieved matched funding of £250,000 from Sport England.
The aim of the partnership is to work across Wiltshire with rural and isolated communities to increase the availability of sport and active recreation. The monies are to be used to fund projects aimed at helping people in rural communities over the next 5 years.
