Smoke Free Wiltshire Alliance
Purpose/Vision
‘Every man, woman and child knowing that environmental tobacco smoke is “not just annoying – it’s dangerous”. Smoke free is the only option for health’.
Funding
The Alliance has received funding over a three year period (October 2003 to 2006) from the Government Office of the South West of £15,000 annually; and further funding of £7,250 in November 2006.
Background
‘Choosing Health – making healthy choices easier’ – the Public Health White Paper published in November 2004 –included the aims to ban smoking in all enclosed public places and workplaces (except those specifically exempted) by 2008. However, following a review, the changes in legislation with effect from 1 July 2007 requires all public enclosed places and all workplaces to be smoke free.
Objectives
- to provide a countywide focus for the ‘It’s not just annoying – it’s dangerous’ project in order to:
- promote the Wiltshire Smoke Free Award
- facilitate an increase in the number of smoke free work places, and
- support children and young people both not starting smoking as well as helping them quit
- help promote local NHS smoking cessation services
- to develop a countywide plan to support the implementation of smoking bans
- to raise awareness of the harmful effects of smoking, and services available to support quitting smoking through:
- Leaflet campaigns
- Local media
- The development of exemplar organisations
- The further development of healthy schools
- to provide support to organisations aspiring to ‘exemplar’ status through the use of the Achieving Smoke Freedom Toolkit (ASH / CIEH) or other templates deemed appropriate.
- to strengthen the knowledge of, and access to, current expertise in tobacco controls through:
- Environmental Health Officers
- Health Promotion Specialists
- Smoking Cessation Advisors
- to secure the engagement of public sector organisations to reduce smoking in the workplace – now focussing on total site bans
- to utilise smoking survey results for Wiltshire in targeted interventions with 11 to 15 year old young people in order to:
- Prevent starting smoking
- Assist stopping smoking
- to agree and then monitor targets for reducing the number of public sector employees and the number of 15 year olds who smoke.
Reporting
