Council tax - payment
About this service
Please note: Payments must arrive by the dates specified on your bill. Any delay in providing payment may result in the issue of a reminder notice. The Council is only obliged to issue two such notices within the same financial year and upon issue of a third notice the Council will demand full payment and end your ability to pay the remaining charge by instalments.
Any payment which is not equal to, or a multiple of, an instalment will be allocated to the oldest debt.
The Council will not accept post dated cheques under any circumstances.
Payment instalments can be over 10 months, 2 half-yearly (no prompter will be issued in September) or 1 yearly.
The number of instalments given can reduce if you receive your bill during the financial year
Direct Debit
Direct Debits are claimed on the 1st,15th or 28th of the month. You must use the form related to your local office. If you have already agreed to pay by Direct Debit, the instalments will automatically be requested from your bank or building society on the dates shown on the bill. Once set up you need do nothing further.

This service accepts debit and credit cards - please ensure that you have your Council Tax reference number to hand. Please use the first option.
Internet banking
Use our Online Payments facility. Payments can be made using a debit and credit card. Allow 5 days for the transaction. Please use the first option.
Standing order
If you wish to use this method of payment, please obtain a form from your bank and complete it using your reference number and the Council's bank details as shown below:

At the Post Office
- Payments may be made by cash or cheque (payable to ‘Post Office Ltd’) at any Post Office in the country. The service is free to users, however, the Post Office will accept payments only when accompanied by a Council Payment Card.
- If you do not have a Payment Card please contact us well before your first payment date.
Direct to the Council (in person or by post)
All payments should be sent or brought into your local office as shown at the bottom of this page.
The cashier opening hours are: 9.00 am - 5.00 pm Monday to Thursday, 9.00 am - 4.30 pm Friday.
You will need
You will need your reference number, you can find this number on your council tax bill.
If a receipt is required please provide a request together with your payment. Cash should not be sent through the post unless in a registered envelope.
Please note a payment card will not automatically be sent to you. If you wish to pay by this method please contact the Council who will arrange delivery.
