Volunteer Mentor Role Description
Responsible to the Mentoring Scheme Co-ordinator, and working as a volunteer attached to the multi-disciplinary Youth Offending Team, you will work with 10-17 year olds who are offending (or at risk of offending) and who may be out of full-time education or in the care of the Local Authority. Mentoring would usually take place within a community setting.
Your role will be:
- To establish and maintain positive and supportive mentoring relationships with young people (‘mentees’).
- To provide one-to-one weekly support to the mentee, for 1 to 2 hours once a week for a maximum period of 12 months.
- To provide consistency and continuity to young people who are in a period of crisis or transition in their lives.
- To provide a positive role model.
- To advise, assist, support and motivate the mentee in developing the social skills and attitudes that will assist them in achieving and sustaining their personal goals.
- To encourage and support the mentee in pursuing their education, training and employment.
- To assist the mentee in accessing existing community resources.
- To support the mentee in any attempts they make to change their offending behaviour.
- To keep brief records of meetings with the mentee, as required by the scheme.
- To keep the mentoring staff informed of any relevant issues affecting the mentee’s well-being.
- To participate in regular individual and peer support sessions, and in mentoring training events.
- To work in an anti-discriminatory manner, and to promote Equal Opportunities for young people.
- To be aware of, and to work within the scheme’s ‘Good Practice’ guidelines.
- To adhere to the Scheme’s policies regarding confidentiality and child protection.
Wiltshire Youth offending team will provide:
- Initial mentoring training and further information or training opportunities as available.
- Ongoing support and supervision, both in an individual and group setting.
- Agreed travelling costs and out of pocket expenses.
