Permitted Hours of Employment for Children
School Days
- 7am until 8am
- 2 hours after school up to 7pm
- If a child works in the morning, they can only work for one hour after school up to 7pm
- Maximum of 12 hours per week (Monday to Sunday)
Saturdays
- Aged 13 and 14: Up to 5 hours between 7am and 7pm
- Aged 15 and 16: Up to 8 hours between 7am and 7pm, they must have a one hour break after working 4 hours consecutively
Sundays
- Aged 13, 14, 15 and 16: Up to 2 hours between 7am and 7pm
School Holidays (Monday to Friday)
- Aged 13 and 14: Up to 5 hours between 7am and 7pm, they must have a one hour break after working 4 hours consecutively.
- Aged 15 and 16: Up to 8 hours between 7am and 7pm, they must have a one hour break after working 4 hours consecutively
Maximum Hours
- The maximum number of hours a 13 or 14 year old can work during a school holiday week (Sunday to Saturday) is 25 hours
- The maximum number of hours a 15 or 16 year old can work during a school holiday week (Sunday to Saturday) is 35 hours
- They must have at least 2 consecutive weeks break from work per year
A child still requires a Work Permit until the last Friday in June of school year 11 even if they have reached 16 prior to this date.
