Creating a Safer School Environment

Top

A safe school environment is essential for creating an atmosphere where students can feel comfortable to learn, and staff can be comfortable to work. This can mean physical safety and security, for example:

  • Measures to stop strangers coming onto school premises
  • Proper fire procedures and non flammable materials
  • Doors and windows which open properly, but which can be locked
  • Floors that are not so slippery people always fall over

But also it can mean other, more intangible things:

  • Not having corners where people can hide
  • Having rules about big groups in the corridors
  • Making sure there is a quiet area in the playground
  • Having separate lunchtimes for older and younger students
  • Having robust policies on things like bullying, behaviour and drugs and alcohol.

Safety means different things to different people. One of the best ways to find out what people think makes a school secure is to do some consultation. Implementing measures that students or teachers have suggested will ensure that the school feels safe for the people who study or work there.

If you have any comments or suggestions about the safer schools pages, please send them to saferschools@wiltshire.gov.uk or fill in and return our feedback form.
