Schools have a duty to safeguard the security and well being of their students, as well as the health and safety of their staff. In addition, students will be poorly equipped to learn in an environment that they do not feel safe or secure in. For these reasons, it is important to create as safe and secure a school environment as possible.
One of the best ways to do this is to involve all members of the school community, including parents, students, staff and governors, as well as potentially the wider community.

Having a designated member of staff is another effective way of dealing with school security. They will need to be aware of bullying, alcohol and drugs and any victim of crime work which is done in the school, and to coordinate with members of staff responsible for them.
Children are also at risk on the journey to and from school. Safe Routes to Schools are a Sustrans project to help promote safe and healthy means of getting to schools.
