In addition to their educational responsibilities, schools have a pastoral duty for the safety and welfare of their students. This includes Child Protection. By law, schools must have a Child Protection Policy and Procedures, which much include a designated teacher. In addition, staff should be trained in child protection, including signs of abuse and handling disclosures.
However, child protection is only one part of ensuring that students feel safe, and ready to learn. Addressing bullying, asb, and alcohol and drugs will all help to promote a safe school environment. Making sure students know how to disclose information or report crimes is important too. Displaying helpline numbers or holding regular assemblies can also help.
