Preventing crime

Many children are at risk of getting in trouble with the law, and the Youth Justice Board (YJB) has developed a number of programmes, which can intervene to try to prevent this happening. For example Youth Inclusion Programmes, Youth Inclusion and Support Panels, Safer School Partnerships and mentoring programmes are all designed to prevent young people being drawn into criminal behaviour before it starts.

In Wiltshire, there is a Youth Inclusion and Support Panel, for 8 – 13 year olds, called Families in Focus; if the child and their parents/carers agree, you can refer a child who you think is at risk of involvement in offending and anti-social behaviour to Families in Focus.  It is a multi-agency panel that aims to ensure that children at risk and their families receive mainstream and other services at the earliest opportunity.  For more information contact: 01225 768684.

The No-Way Trust (also known as Prison! Me! No Way!) give mainstream school presentations on prisons and prison life to individual classes and runs Crime and Safety Awareness Days for schools. It also has a range of resources for teachers, and runs Prison Officer Assisted Youth Offending Team Schemes for young people involved in offending behaviour.

Wiltshire Pathways the Wiltshire Children & Young People's Services Partnership which has responsibility for developing services for children and young people in Wiltshire on a multi-agency basis. The website has contacts for other services that should be working to preevent offending, such as Children and Families Social Work Teams, Connexions, and mental health teams.
