Details of Service

Service aims

  • To support Wiltshire's SEN policy of inclusion in local mainstream schools
  • To promote independence for learning and for life
  • To secure equality of access to materials and the learning environment for hearing impaired pupils
  • To ensure maximum access to the National Curriculum for all hearing impaired pupils
  • To ensure quality and consistency of provision for all hearing impaired pupils across the County

What do we offer?

We work with families, schools and pre-school settings to assist them to develop the potential of children and young people with a hearing impairment. This includes:

  • advice and support for families, pre-school staff, class teachers and school Special Educational Needs Co-ordinators (SENCOs)
  • providing training for all teacher assistants (TAs) working with hearing impaired pupils, and offering training for SENCOs and school staff
  • providing advice for Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and the Statutory Assessment of Special Educational Needs process, and monitoring pupils' progress
  • attending Annual Reviews for hearing impaired pupils with Statements of SEN
  • providing and maintaining specialist equipment as advised by the Hearing Impairment Service
  • allocating funding for TA support from the Low Incidence Support budget
  • liaising with parents, health, social services and all other professionals supporting hearing impaired children and young people

How is the service accessed?

If parents think that their child is having difficulty with their hearing, they should contact their GP. If hospital assessments are then carried out, the Hearing Impairment Service will be automatically notified.

If a school or pre-school setting thinks that a pupil is having difficulty with their hearing, they should talk to parents firstly, and get their permission before making a referral on the Hearing Impaired Service referral form. The forms are available from the Service.
