Wiltshire Visual Impairment: Criteria for Referring a child

Top

The following fulfils the criteria:

N.B. The higher the second number the worse the vision.  6/6 – 6/9 are within normal limits. 6/60 is poor distance vision.

  • Visual acuity (with glasses worn) recorded as 6/18 or worse ’both’ (this means with both eyes tested together)
  • Visual acuity (with glasses worn) of 6/18 or worse in the better eye (if results for each eye are given separately)
  • A diagnosed eye condition, even if the acuity is better than 6/18.  This diagnosis must be from an ophthalmologist.
  • Registration as sight impaired or severely sight impaired. This is on the recommendation of an Ophthalmologist and the VI service will carry out the registration or transfer of registration.

The following do not meet the criteria:

  • Monocular vision where sight is within normal limits in the good eye, and stable
  • Squints
  • Non-fixed reference eye
  • Poor tracking skills
  • Mild colour deficiency
  • Visual perceptual difficulties
  • Lack of binocular (or 3D) vision

If you do not have any medical information regarding the vision the child must be taken to an optician in the first instance.
