Wiltshire Visual Impairment: Criteria for Referring a child
The following fulfils the criteria:
N.B. The higher the second number the worse the vision. 6/6 – 6/9 are within normal limits. 6/60 is poor distance vision.
- Visual acuity (with glasses worn) recorded as 6/18 or worse ’both’ (this means with both eyes tested together)
- Visual acuity (with glasses worn) of 6/18 or worse in the better eye (if results for each eye are given separately)
- A diagnosed eye condition, even if the acuity is better than 6/18. This diagnosis must be from an ophthalmologist.
- Registration as sight impaired or severely sight impaired. This is on the recommendation of an Ophthalmologist and the VI service will carry out the registration or transfer of registration.
The following do not meet the criteria:

- Mild colour deficiency
- Visual perceptual difficulties
