At a meeting of Wiltshire County Council's Cabinet on 09 May 2003, Members agreed that Wiltshire should move towards implementation of the Standard School Year (formerly known as the six-term year) as recommended by the Local Government Association (LGA).
The principles underlying the Local Government Association's proposals for the Standard School Year are detailed on the Local Government Association website.
In Wiltshire, all five Staff Development Days (or the equivalent of 30 hours) are set at our individual school's discretion. Your child's school will be able to inform you of their arrangements for taking these training days and a list of individual school dates are included within the schools directory. All days will be taken within the 195 published term days.
A pupil continues to be of statutory school age up until the finish of the day on the last Friday in June each year, regardless of whether that pupil attains the age of 16 before that date. Only then does that pupil cease to be of compulsory school age. This law covers all pupils.
Until the last Friday in June in the school year in which children reach the age of 16:
Pupils do not have to remain on the school site up to that date. Work experience, educational visits, link courses and similar provisions by a school would fall within the category of an approved educational activity and would not count as an absence. Study leave may be granted which would be regarded as an authorised absence.
