Elections Press Release

Young people across Wiltshire have taken part in the first ever public vote using texting.

Last week (23 - 29 January) young people from across the county voted in the UK Youth Parliament and Wiltshire Assembly of Youth (WAY) elections via their mobile phones.

Over 1,050 text votes were polled by young people with the results being updated daily on the youth development service website.

The text voting trial was suggested by young people as a way to engage a wider audience and to prevent the larger schools always electing their own candidates.

Thirteen young people stood in the elections this year, with 7 candidates running for election to the youth parliament and 6 solely standing to be elected to Wiltshire Assembly of youth.

The youth development service held a series of events during the election week to encourage young people to vote. Highlights of the election week included travelling road-shows at youth centres across the county from Malmesbury to Mere where candidates put forward their manifestos and answered young people’s questions.

A campaign bus also went around towns in west Wiltshire rallying young people and using a loud haler to attract attention to candidates and the elections.

Wiltshire County Council cabinet member for young people, Nancy Bryant, said: “The election was a great success at engaging young people in real democratic processes and demonstrating once again that if asked young people have clear views and opinions on issues which affect them in Wiltshire.”

The successful candidates at the close of voting were:

  • UK Youth Parliament Member for North and West Wiltshire - Becky Holloway - Yatesbury 16 - John Bentley School
  • UK Youth Parliament Deputy Member for North and West Wiltshire - Stuart Dingle (16) - Chippenham - Sheldon School.
  • UK Youth Parliament Member for Salisbury and Kennett - Josh Harris - The Woodfords 16 - Bishop Wordworths School
  • UK Youth Parliament Deputy Member for Salisbury and Kennett - Polly Selby (15) - Shrewton - Sth Wiltshire Grammar School.

Successful WAY candidates include:

  • North and West Wiltshire - Chris Baker 17 (Wootton Bassett), Richard Graves 16 (Chippenham), Neil Tucker 16 (Melksham)
  • Salisbury and Kennett - Kayleigh Williams 14 (Salisbury), Steven Say 13 (Salisbury/Downton), Cory Preston 16 (Salisbury), Paige Grinter 15 (Amesbury), Hannah Fogarty 14 (Salisbury).
