Education is a vital part of a young person's development and it is essential that looked after children receive the same educational opportunities as all other children. We take our responsibilities as corporate parents very seriously and are determined to help looked after children and young people do as well as they can academically.
Social workers and foster carers are trained in all aspects of the education system to ensure that they advocate for and support children and young people to do well. Every school has a designated teacher specifically focusing on supporting looked after children in their school.
Looked after children Personal Advisors are based within each Local Education Team to provide advice and support to those of compulsory school age.
When a child becomes looked after, there are clear processes in place to ensure that the education of the young person is considered and carefully planned. Our responsibilities do not end when a child reaches 16. Like any good parent, we want to give our children a head start when they leave home and we offer all our young care leavers full support on their onwards and upwards journey through university and towards independence.
