Energy and fuel
About this service
There is growing evidence that man-made greenhouse gas emissions are having a noticeable effect on the Earth's climate across the whole world, with energy production and use being a major source of greenhouse gases.
In an attempt to make sure buildings in Wiltshire are as energy efficient as possible, saving both energy and money, the council is proactive in energy management.
Raising awareness
Wiltshire Council recognises the importance of raising building users' awareness of energy use. Significant savings can be achieved by occupants turning off lights, closing doors and reporting overheating and information is circulated regularly to staff. There is an Energy Management Procedure for all staff to follow, as well as a Wiltshire Council Practical Guide on Energy and Water Conservation.
Monitoring and targeting
TEAMsigma is a software management tool used to monitor all Wiltshire Council sites' fuel bills, energy use and water use. It assists in allowing sudden changes in energy and water use, which may indicate problems on site, to be spotted. Using this information the Council is also able to offer advice to schools, libraries and other Wiltshire Council properties on saving energy. Work is progressing to develop a system for benchmarking and target setting for individual buildings, and the issuing of an annual report to all premises detailing their energy use.
Fuel purchase
The Council buys fuel through the Office of Government Commerce (OGC), whose expertise allows energy to be bought at a very competitive price, achieving very favourable contract rates for our properties. We also purchase 100% Green Energy for premises in the electricity contracts, which reduces Wiltshire Council's CO2 emissions significantly, and means we are not liable to pay the additional cost of Climate Change Levy.
Corporate Building Team commitment
The Corporate Build Team are committed to energy efficiency in the form of sustainable building as a whole and, with a longer term view, are now piloting the use of the BREEAM system (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Model) on two new school projects.
The Build Team have also made a Level 1 pledge to Future Foundations to demonstrate commitment towards sustainability.
