About the speaker

In a long and successful professional life Sir Al has gained a wealth of experience, which he’s channelled into improving the lives of children and young people.

He trained as a children’s physician and clinical scientist, and was the first Director of Clinical Research and Development at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London. He then went on to more firsts – the first National Clinical Director for Children in government and the first Children’s Commissioner for England. He has also held the position of President of the British Medical Association.

Among other things he is now Visiting Professor of Advocacy for Children and Childhood at Nottingham Trent University, UK, and Professor Emeritus of Child Health, University College London.
