Discover workshops

Family Learning discover workshops are fun and free. You’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Join in with various craft-based activities
  • Find out about informal courses running in your community designed to help you learn new skills or develop existing skills
  • Discover ways to support your children’s learning at home with ideas and resources to use at home together
  • Meet other parents who are keen to progress and make new friends

These workshops offer a taste of what you can do next to help yourself and your family. Think of them as an introduction to exploring the benefits of learning and what is on offer to support your learning journey. Workshops usually take place in schools, children’s centres or community centres.

From a discover workshop you can progress onto our ‘next step’ Family Learning courses. These are relaxed and informal and can cover anything from budgeting to supporting your children with maths or English homework.  You will also find out about other learning opportunities in your area.

Discover workshops are perfect for less confident mums, dads, grandparents and carers who would like to support their school-aged children. Younger children are welcome to join in too.

Typically, very short.  Depending on the theme and the activities we have planned it could be anything from 2 hours to half a day.

Funding is available to cover the cost of discover workshops so it will be free for you to attend. The funding does not support paid carers of other children to attend, unless attending with their own child.

The Family Learning Team will be at the workshop to have a chat to find out about support you may need to guide you on your learning. They will take some details so they can keep in touch and let you know about the planned course happening after the workshop.

Speak to your child’s school or local Children’s Centre for more information and to find out about a discover workshop running near you. The Family Learning Team will talk to you before you arrive so you will know if this is the right course for you.

If you have 5 GCSEs grades A to C (5 O Levels) this course may not be suitable for you. Please contact us if you require further details; we’d love to hear from you
