The Emergency Planning Unit (EPU) receives Flood Watches and Flood Warnings direct from the Environment Agency. Should the warning indicate that Local Authority assistance may be required the warning is relayed to the relevant County Council departments and District Councils. Where necessary we would set up rest centres for people evacuated from their homes and arrange temporary housing.
The Police coordinate the emergency services in a major flood incident and help with evacuation of people from their homes where necessary. The Fire Service is responsible primarily for saving life, rescue and recovery and may also pump out floodwater (there may be a charge for this service to householders).
The district councils in an emergency may be able to help with sandbags. However, householders are responsible for protecting their own property from flooding and advice on how to do this can be found on the Environment Agency website.
The National Flood Forum has produced a catalogue of flood protection products called 'blue pages'.
In preparation for flooding, advice on filling and laying sandbags is available from Floodline 24 hours a day (0845 988 1188 minicom - 0845 602 6340).
