Summary of Service

If you have been finding it difficult to manage at home, you might be considering moving into a care home; however it is important to remember that there are various options. We may be able to help you to continue to live in your own home or advise you on housing that would better suit your needs, such as sheltered accommodation.

There are two main types of care home:

  • Residential Care Homes provide support as if you were in your own home, and help with personal care such as getting up, washing, dressing and going to the toilet.
  • Nursing Care Homes provide care for people with complex needs who require the skills of a qualified nurse. They are required by law to have a qualified nurse on duty 24 hours a day.

Some care homes provide both residential and nursing care. You may choose a home like this so that you do not need to move if your condition changes. They also enable couples with different needs to stay together in the same home.

Commission for Social Care Inspection

Residential care homes and nursing homes are registered and inspected by the Commission for

Social Care Inspection (CSCI), www.csci.org.uk They can provide you with inspection reports or care homes. You can contact them on:  01249 454550 (as from 08.10.07 – 0117930 7110).

Details of Service

How do I access a Residential or Nursing Home?

As with all services from Wiltshire County Council’s Adult Social Care Services, the eligibility criteria is applied to assessment and funding from the department.

What is an assessment of need?

If you meet the eligibility criteria we are able to carry out an assessment. This means we talk to you to find out more about your situation and your care needs.  Your needs for services may be due to physical disability or impairment, mental health problems or environmental or social factors.  The more complex your needs, the more detailed your assessment will be.

Will I have to pay?

The policy on contributions for Residential care is set out by Central Government.

If you have savings/capital of more than £22,250 you will have to contribute the full cost of the accommodation you choose.  You will have full freedom to choose the home in which you wish to live, but if your savings are only a relatively small amount over £22,250 you may soon need support.  Your choice of care home may then be restricted.  (See FS2 Residential/Nursing Home Care Fees)

Can I visit the Home before I decide?

Yes, most Homes welcome people visiting before making a decision and you can visit more than one home if you wish.
