Hazardous Chemicals and Dangerous Goods are transported throughout the United Kingdom, by road and by rail, every day. All vehicles carrying hazardous materials are required to be marked in accordance with the HAZCHEM Code.
HAZCHEM Codes are designed to assist the emergency services in the first few minutes of dealing with a hazardous goods distribution incident. Further information on the Codes is available from The National Chemical Emergency Centre (NCEC) website. The NCEC plays a key role in national arrangements for responding to chemical incidents. It provides a 24-hour national advice service to the public emergency services on dealing with chemical incidents.
The Wiltshire and Swindon Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Guide produced by members of the Local Resilience Forum (LRF) covers the procedures of all the LRF partner agencies when dealing with an incident involving hazardous materials such as chemicals and radioactive substances. The Guide can be downloaded from the Wiltshire Police website (under downloadable documents). The aim of the document is to provide a guide for a co-ordinated response by all responding agencies to the management and containment of a HAZMAT incident in order to deal with and minimise:
This will involve close liaison with all the emergency services especially the Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service. They will be responsible for obtaining advice on 'hazardous materials' and assessing the hazard to give advice to the Police and enable them to advise the public to shelter or evacuate.
