Wiltshire Carers Policy & Strategy 2003 - 2006
How many carers in Wiltshire?
39886 people in Wiltshire said in the 2001 Census that they have a caring role.
Most carers are managing with no support from Statutory and Voluntary Agencies.
Many carers do not recognise themselves as carers and do not know they can have help but would benefit from some kind of support.
New legislation and a government grant have created new opportunities to develop and provide services for carers.
A working group which included carers drafted the Strategy and consulted widely with carers, through Carers Voice, Carers Action Groups and with Voluntary and Statutory organisations.
The Strategy reflects views of many carers and has been adopted by Wiltshire County Council, the West Wiltshire, Kennet and North Wiltshire and South Wiltshire Primary Care Trusts and the Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust.
Local planning groups, which include carers, are making local plans to take the Strategy forward and monitor progress.
We will work together to make sure carers get the information they need when, where and how they need it.
Assessment and services will be promoted to meet the needs of all carers. Particular attention will be paid to working with carers of people with mental health needs, carers from black and ethnic minorities and to the employment needs of carers.
We are committed to doing this in ways which do not impose a burden on carers. Carers Voice and Carers Action Groups have been developed to help us listen to carers views.
Through updates on websites, Carers Voice reports and Carers Support newsletters.
