Crossroads

Crossroads-Caring for Carers, is the leading provider of practical support for Carers in England & Wales. The objectives of Crossroads are to give Carers time to be themselves, by enabling them to take a much needed short break from their caring responsibilities.

Services Only

The Cinnamon Trust

The Cinnamon Trust seeks to relieve the anxieties, problems and sometimes injustices, faced by elderly and terminally ill people and their pets, thereby saving a great deal of human sadness and animal suffering. Anyone of any age can make arrangements for pets that may outlive them to come into the Trust's care.

The Kiloran Trust

The Kiloran Trust provides residential supportive breaks for all carers looking after someone at home.who requires full time commitment to their care. Typically, the carers might be a husband whose wife has Alzheimer's Disease, a daughter whose elderly mother is a victim of a stroke, parents of a child with both physical and learning disabilities.

They welcome carers who are looking after a wide variety of illnesses and conditions. Sometimes they are able to welcome "carer families" who need a short break together whilst the person being cared for is in respite.

Help the Aged

Help the Aged is a charity whose aim is to fight to free disadvantaged older people in the UK and overseas from poverty, isolation and neglect. They research the needs of older people, campaign for changes in policy and provide services to alleviate hardship and deprivation.

If you are looking for advice on claiming benefits, home security or a wide range of other areas for yourself or for the person that you care for, Help the Aged have a range of regularly updated leaflets that might be able to help can help.

Carers.gov.uk

This website provides details of the services or benefits affecting carers. It provides facts and figures and definitions about Carers as well as links to related web-sites.

Directgov is the place to turn for the widest range of government information and services.

The Princess Royal Trust for Carers

The Princess Royal Trust for Carers provides comprehensive carers support services in the UK. Through its network of 122 independently managed Carers' Centres and interactive websites, the Trust provides quality information, advice and support services.

The Trust's ‘Help for Carers directory page’ has links through to key topics and articles about caring, which in turn signpost you to the information available on the internet.

The Farm Crisis Network

The Farm Crisis Network has been developed since 1993 to help families in farming and related activities who are experiencing problems. It is based on local groups whose members have a combination of technical and pastoral understanding and are able to respond quickly and confidentially to requests for help.

The types of problems that the Farm Crisis Network aim to help with include:  Tiredness, overwork, anxiety, illness, bereavement, family relationships, passing the farm to the next generation, loneliness, isolation, form filling, regulations, debt, business viability, and environmental or ethical concerns.

Assist UK

Assist UK has a wide network of centres that introduce people to products and solutions which make independent living easier and safer, creating greater choice and control. They have a list of their products on their website.

In Wiltshire there are two Independent Living Centres where you can see and try a wide range of products and receive information on where to buy or how to get help to obtain what you need. Details of these centres are shown below:

Advice, Services and a Helpline

Age Concern­

Age Concern support all people over 50 in the UK, ensuring that they get the most from life. They provide essential services such as day care and information. They also campaign on issues like age discrimination and pensions, and work to influence public opinion and government policy about older people.

Age Concern also offers an information line service to older people and their relatives and friends, as well as professionals and carers.

Counsel and Care

Counsel and Care is a charity giving advice and information to older people, their relatives and carers across the UK.They specialise in free advice for people over 60, their friends, carers and relatives.

They can help if you, or someone you know:

  • Has a problem with finding and paying for care - at home, in supported housing or in a care home.
  • Need help identifying which benefits you are entitled to and who might help you make the application.
  • Are worried about the standard of care you or the person you look out for is receiving.
  • Want to apply to charities for help with an unexpected expense, to buy a vital piece of equipment or to pay for a much-needed holiday.
  • Have concerns about your health, hospital care or hospital discharge.
  • Are having difficulty getting your views and wishes taken seriously.
  • Want to know how you can remain in your own home for as long as possible.
  • Are the carer of an older person and need some advice about what support may be available for you.

Carers UK

Carers UK provide carers with a voice to win the recognition and support that they deserve. Carers UK aim to make a difference to carer's lives by:

  • Campaigning for a better deal for carers.
  • Informing carers of their rights and what help is available so that they can make choices about their lives.
  • CarersLine, their free advice service, receives over 50,000 enquiries each year (contact information is available in the ‘contact us’ section of the website).
  • Training and advising professionals who work with carers.
  • Working through their membership and networks of branches.

Action on Elder Abuse

Action on Elder Abuse is a national organisation based in London. It was established because of concerns about the lack of information and assistance for those who were abused or were at risk of abusing.

A core activity for Action on Elder Abuse is the provision of their helpline, which operates from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Monday to Friday. The helpline is confidential and provides information and emotional support. It is available to people who are being abused, those who are concerned about possible abuse, carers and workers who may have similar concerns, and those who are interested in finding out more about elder abuse.
