Services and Advice

The Department for Work and Pensions­

The Department for Work and Pensions aims to promote opportunity and independence for all through modern, customer-focused services. It helps people to achieve their potential through employment so that they are able to provide for their children and to work and save for secure retirement.

Three of the services that it offers that may be of use to you or the person that you care for are:

The Pension Service - This is a dedicated service for current and future pensioners. It provides state financial support to over 11 million pensioners delivered at a national and local level and in partnership with other organisations. It also helps people to plan and provide for retirement.

The Disability and Carers Service - This service supports disabled people and their carers, whether or not they work. It is responsible for delivering Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance and Carer's Allowance.

Services for Adults of Working Age - The Department is responsible for a range of benefits and services for people of working age, providing financial help and support.

The DWP website also contains information about leaflets and guides to further benefits and services.

Neil Bateman and Company­

The Neil Bateman website contains links to various sets of welfare and benefit advice as well as containing some standard letters that you can download and adapt for your client/relative. The letters available cover a wide range of topics including:

  • Client consent to disclose information
  • Tax credits - consent to disclose
  • Notification of a change of Circumstances
  • Revision or supersession request
  • Request to waive recovery of overpayment: - both housing benefit and council tax benefit and other benefit payments
  • Social Fund Review requests
  • Support for a community care grant application
  • Benefit and tax credit appeal letters
  • Request to waive recovery of tax credit overpayment.

Advice only

The Citizens Advice Bureau

The Citizens Advice Bureau helps people resolve their legal, money and other problems by providing free information and advice from nearly 3,400 locations, and by influencing policymakers. Advice is available face-to-face and by telephone. Most bureaux offer home visits and some also provide email advice.

Their advice helps people resolve their debt, benefits, housing, legal, discrimination, employment, immigration, consumer and other problems and is available to everyone regardless of race, gender, sexuality, age, nationality, disability or religion.
