Wiltshire's Long-Term Care Charter (Better Care, Higher Standards)

Introduction

This Charter has been drawn up jointly by the Department of Adult & Community Services (formerly known as the Social Services Department), Health and Housing, with help from local people who regularly use our services. It is for people in Wiltshire who are:

  • mainly over 18 and have difficulties as a result of ageing, long-term illness, mental distress, physical, sensory or learning disability, or require support.
  • carers who support people in these circumstances.

A Carer is someone who is looking after a relative, child, partner or friend who is frail or has a physical or mental illness or disability or is affected by substance abuse. Carers are not paid to be carers and they do not always live with the person they look after. Carers can provide care for a number of people in a number of different circumstances at the same time.

A Young Carer is a child or young person (up to the age of 25 in Wiltshire) whose life is affected by caring, over and above just "helping out." Young carers may take on a level of responsibility usually associated with an adult.

A Service User is anyone who receives, or is eligible to receive, a service from Health, Housing or the Department of Adult & Community Services.
