Respite Care is a service providing opportunities for users to pursue chosen activities or to have respite and/or giving carers short breaks from their caring responsibilities.
The term Respite Care generally means giving a carer a short break from the person they care for - and the cared-for person a short break from them! Respite Care also applies to people who may not have a carer, but who need a break from their home circumstances.
Respite Care can include:
Specific information about Respite Care for carers can be found by view the Respite Care for Carers service page.
The cost of Respite Care will be determined by a "Fairer Charging Assessment," which means you may have to pay towards the cost, depending on your age and what savings you have. All carers' services are provided at no cost to the carers.
Further details about the financial contributions relating to Respite Care can be found by following the link in the related pages section.
Respite Care is available for all user groups (people with learning difficulties, people with physical disabilities, people with mental health problems, children and older people).
The Respite Care needs of service users and their carers are normally worked out through a Needs Assessment. This is arranged through your local Health and Social Care office or, if you are in hospital, by the Hospital Social Work team.
The Needs Assessment involves a professional, from your local Health and Social Care team, talking to you about your concerns and needs and how you feel they can be best met. If it is agreed that Respite Care is needed, a Care Manager/Care Co-ordinator will either arrange this with you or will offer a Direct Payment, so that you can arrange the Respite Care yourself.
For details about our Eligibility Criteria for Adult and Community Services, please see our Eligibility Criteria document (pdf 1429Kb).
For more details and information about the Needs Assessment process and Direct Payments see the Related page menu.
You can also get help by contacting your local Department of Adult and Community Services Offices, or the Wiltshire Customer Care Unit (details provided below). They will either help you directly, or with your permission, contact the appropriate agency with your request for help. If you prefer, you can ask someone else to make contact on your behalf.
