What is it?

With the ending of Care Quality Commission (CQC) ratings and changes to registration conditions for any regulated provider, the Dementia Quality Mark pilot has been set up in partnership with councils across the South West to provide a recognisable single standard of dementia care within care homes.

The Dementia Quality Mark will provide homes with recognition that the delivery of good quality dementia care is a priority for them and that they are continually striding to improve the care they provide to people with dementia.

Why is this important?

The Dementia Quality Mark will help people needing to select a residential or nursing care home, giving them and their families reassurance that the care being given meets the needs of those with dementia. It will also provide confidence that ongoing improvements in practice will lead to better outcomes for those receiving care.

For providers, the Dementia Quality Mark will enable homes to develop and maintain quality assurance in the provision of dementia care, enabling access to improvement networks, peer support, shared learning and provision of best practice tools and materials.

What does it measure?

Quality standards and expectations will always be subject to change, so the award of a Dementia Quality Mark places the onus on the provider to assure care and will indicate that:

  • The care service has a sound approach to the provision of dementia care.
  • The essential building blocks are in place to deliver good care.
  • The care service has an effective quality assurance system to check that the outcomes for people with dementia care are good.
  • The service is committed to ongoing improvement and development.
