What is a carer?

If you provide unpaid support to a family member, partner, friend or neighbour because they are ill, frail, disabled or have mental ill health, eating disorder or substance misuse problems and this person could not manage at home without support then you are a carer.

You may be providing practical help such as cleaning, cooking or physical tasks such as bathing, lifting and dressing.  You may be giving emotional support or have to keep a close eye on the person you care for.  Caring for someone can be demanding and being identified as a carer can be important to get the support you need to continue in your caring role.

How can we help?

Our Team is responsible for commissioning a range of services for carers in Wiltshire on behalf of Wiltshire Council and the NHS Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) who both contribute to a carers pooled budget.  You can read more in the PDFWiltshire Carers Strategy Wiltshire Carers Strategy 476kb

We would encourage you to have a carers assessment as soon as possible so you can find out more about what we can do to support you.

GP surgeries

GP surgeries across Wiltshire have Carers registers and it is important to identify yourself as a Carer so that you receive extra support and advice.  Many run carers clinics which include a health check with a nurse, a longer appointment with a Carer Support Wiltshire worker and financial advice.  GPs can also offer carers a prescription for ‘health breaks’ which will give them a break from caring and improve their physical and emotional health and well being.

Wiltshire Handbook for Carers

The PDFWiltshire Handbook for Carers Wiltshire Carers Handbook 1mb contains useful information for carers and is available free from Carer Support Wiltshire, your local library or GP Surgery.  It includes information on carers rights and the law, Lasting Power of Attorney, Carers’ rights at work and moving on from caring.
