About fostering

Please tell us what you think about our website, we welcome your feedback.

What is a foster carer?

Fostering is a way of providing family-based care for children who cannot live with their parents or other family. It is also about caring for a child in your own home usually on a temporary basis.

As a foster carer you will undertake the day to day care of the child, including ensuring that their physical, emotional, educational and social needs are met.

As a foster carer you will need to help the child keep in touch with their birth family and attend meetings to discuss the child’s welfare and future plans. You may also help to return a child to their birth family or to move him or her to adopters or long term foster carers.

There a many different types of fostering, find out more.

Why children need fostering

Family problems sometimes make it difficult for children to remain with their family, either for a short time or long time. As a local authority we have responsibility to look after these children and foster care is often identified as the best option to meet their needs.

In Wiltshire more than 400 children and young people are looked after by Wiltshire Council and 77% of these children are cared for by our fostering families.

Most children who live with foster carers do so temporarily while children’s services work with their parents to try to help resolve their problems, however some children do not return to their families and may live with foster carers in the longer term or until an adoptive family is found for them.

Our Foster Carers and their families make a genuinely positive difference to children and young people's lives.

For more information about fostering with us please see our information pack or watch footage of Wiltshire foster carers talking about their experiences in our fostering videos.

Could I foster?

Our foster carers come from a diverse range of backgrounds. And it's not just for families, couples and single people can also enjoy the rewards and challenges that fostering brings.

You must be at least 18 or over to foster but it doesn’t matter whether you are:

  • Male or female
  • Men and women regardless of sexual orientation
  • Married, single or living with a partner
  • Childless
  • Able-bodied or living with a disability
  • Living with your own children, step children or without children
  • In work, unemployed or retired
  • Living in your own home or renting
  • From any cultural, ethnic or social background
  • Heterosexual, gay or lesbian

What's really important is that you can provide a safe, secure, nurturing home where children and young people's needs are met.
